The substitute sweetener xylitol is not safe for dogs to consume. Xylitol is usually found in items like sugar-free gum but it can also be found in some types of peanut butter. Dogs love to eat peanut butter so do check the label before offering your pup some peanut butter.
It takes a very small amount of xylitol to kill a canine. If you think your pet may have eaten something (because dogs can be great scavengers and may have browsed in your purse or backpack) please get them to a Vet as soon as possible — this isn’t a substance where wait-and-see is prudent.
An excellent post listing common products with xylitol is at https://www.preventivevet.com/xylitol-products-toxic-for-dogs
